Unlike conventional heat-seeking man-pads, the RBS70 uses laser beam-riding guidance, meaning Russia's infrared countermeasures and electronic jamming — such as the KA-52 helicopter's VTEPS suite — are entirely ineffective against it. Ukraine's combat use of the system proved its worth, with confirmed kills including a KA-52 attack helicopter, an SU-24 jet, and an Mi-8 helicopter, all achieved despite Russian countermeasures. Finland, which shares an 830-mile border with Russia and already operates an earlier RBS70 variant, is upgrading specifically because Ukraine's battlefield record demonstrated the system's unique ability to defeat the very threats Finland now officially prepares to face.
